You Should Be Paying More Attention To Your Lips - Lip Mask Benefits and Tips to Soft Lips

Your beauty shelf is likely stocked with skin care must haves like cleansers, exfoliators, serums and creams, but are you neglecting the skin on your lips? The skin on your lips is more sensitive than the skin anywhere else on your body, so if you’re not taking care of your lips the same you take care of the rest of your skin, pay attention. We've got the inside scoop on keeping your lips kissable with this guide to brighten, smooth, and plump your pout.

Lip Mask Benefits

The skin on your lips is more sensitive than the skin anywhere else on your body. The lips don't have any sweat or sebaceous glands, which help to keep the skin on the rest of your body hydrated and protected from the elements. This makes your lips much more delicate and susceptible to getting dry or chapped and even peeling and splitting, especially during the colder months. When lips are dehydrated, they dry out and shrink. A lip mask can help to hydrate, nourish and heal your lips on a deeper level than everyday lip balm, similar to what a face mask does for your complexion. Adding a lip mask into your beauty routine can not only help prevent your lips from drying out and cracking, but

give you fuller-looking lips that last for hours in just a few minutes.Much like a regular face mask, a volumizing and smoothing lip mask can make your lips (and the skin around them) softer, smoother and plumper. Be sure to exfoliate your lips prior to applying your lip mask to help the active ingredients make it past any dry, flaky pieces of skin and and do a better job hydrating your lips. And be sure to lock in all these lip mask benefits by applying a great lip balm after your mask!

Ten Tips to Soft Lips

  1. Carry a water bottle with you wherever you go. Drinking enough water will keep the body, skin and lips hydrated. The equivalent of at least 9 cups of fluids daily is recommended. Dehydration occurs when the body loses more fluid than it takes in. When the body is dehydrated, it pulls water from certain areas to ensure that the cells stay hydrated. This can cause dryness in the skin, including that of the lips.
  1. Don’t lick your lips. Licking your lips damages the protective barrier, which can dry out the lips. Saliva contains digestive enzymes that can break down this barrier.
  1. Breathe through your nose. You lose moisture from your lips with every breath that passes over them. Try not to breathe with your mouth open, breathing through your nose instead.
  1. Keep your lips hydrated overnight. The air around you tends to dry out your lips while you sleep. Make sure you use a heavy or hydrating lip cream or some petroleum jelly before you sleep.
  1. Run a humidifier overnight. It can replace moisture in dry indoor air (especially while you sleep!) keeping your lips hydrated.
  1. Use a lip scrub.Chapped lips are covered in a layer of dry, deak skin that can prevent healing ingredients in lip balms from seeping in and doing their jobs. Use a lip scrub made from fruit based alpha hydroxy acids to slough away dead skin cells just like you would on your face. Add a sugar lip scrub into your rotation to keep lips healthy and soft.
  1. Massage your lips. Use a lip balm to massage your lips for about 5 minutes every day. This improves the blood circulation in your lips and ensures that they get the nutrients that are needed.
  1. Apply SPF to your lips daily. Lips are susceptible to sunburn since they lack melanin, the pigment that helps shield skin from the sun. Run a little bit of sunscreen spray over your lips during your morning skin care routine while you’re applying it to your face.
  1. Limit your exposure to toxins. Polluted air, smoke, and chemicals can prematurely age skin, making lips look dark or wrinkled. Things like smoking and having too much alcohol or caffeine can aggravate this effect and give your lip color a faded appearance.
  1. Take off your makeup before bed.Sleeping in your makeup is just as bad for the skin on your lips as it is for your complexion. Give your lips a gentle swipe with micellar water before you go to sleep.

Healthy, hydrated lips are soft and plump. If you’re struggling with dry, chapped lips this season avolumizing and smoothing lip mask and these tips will give youbetter looking (and no doubt, feeling!) lips in no time. But if after adding regular lip masks and these tips your lips are still unusually dry or chapped, it might be time to visit a dermatologist.
