Bakuchiol for Fine Lines, Wrinkles & Mature Skin: What to Expect

September 27, 2026

Bakuchiol may modestly improve the appearance of fine lines and photoaged skin in some formulations. It is an optional cosmetic approach, not a way to erase deep folds, lift sagging skin or guarantee collagen replacement. The strongest practical question is whether a particular formula offers a useful, tolerable addition to your routine.

For ingredient identity and the wider evidence picture, see bakuchiol for skin. Here, the focus is visible aging rather than acne or general ingredient combinations.

What do human studies show?

A 2026 randomized, double-blind study enrolled 73 Chinese adults and compared a 0.5% bakuchiol cream with the same vehicle without bakuchiol over 84 days. The authors reported improvements in wrinkle appearance and other photoaging measures. This adds useful vehicle-controlled evidence, but it was a single-center study with supplier involvement, not proof that every serum performs identically across all populations.

The earlier direct comparison with retinol is discussed in bakuchiol versus retinol. Taken together, the findings support interest in bakuchiol while leaving questions about long-term effects, optimal formulations and which users benefit most.

Fine lines, dehydration and deeper wrinkles are not the same

What you notice Useful perspective
Lines that look more obvious when skin is dry Moisturizer can change surface appearance and comfort; an immediate smoother feel does not isolate bakuchiol’s effect.
Persistent fine lines and uneven texture These are closer to the cosmetic concerns studied in photoaging research.
Deep expression lines, folds or laxity Do not expect a topical cosmetic to reproduce an office procedure or reverse every structural change.

Does bakuchiol increase collagen or elasticity?

Laboratory research includes collagen-related findings, but a change in a cell model is not a measurement of how much collagen a person will gain from a retail product. Improved wrinkle photographs also do not prove a particular collagen mechanism.

Claims about elasticity need the same care: ask what was measured, with which formula and against what comparison. Avoid turning broad “firming” language into a promise of lifting. For the larger ingredient landscape, explore evidence behind visible-aging ingredients and peptides in skincare.

How can mature skin use it comfortably?

Age alone does not determine skin type. Mature skin may be dry, oily, sensitive or still prone to blemishes. Choose a texture around those needs. A moisturizing cream can reduce the number of steps; a light serum may fit someone who already likes their moisturizer.

Keep daily sun protection in place and avoid introducing several actives together. A simple evening routine is cleanser, the chosen bakuchiol formula and moisturizer if needed. Follow the product’s order and frequency instructions rather than assuming every formula needs twice-daily use.

Decide what would count as a useful result

Choose one visible goal, such as a particular area of fine lines or overall texture. Compare photographs in similar lighting and avoid judging a new formula immediately after applying a rich moisturizer. Comfort matters alongside appearance: persistent irritation can make an otherwise appealing routine impractical.

Use the results assessment guide to set a sensible review point, and the formula-selection guide if you are deciding between an oil, serum or cream. The broader mature-skin routine guide helps keep the basic routine balanced.
