Transepidermal Water Loss: What TEWL Means for Skin

Transepidermal water loss, or TEWL, is the movement of water through the skin into the surrounding air. Some loss is normal. Higher readings under comparable conditions can indicate weaker barrier function, but TEWL is not the same as sweating, surface dryness or the amount of water you drink.

How water moves through the barrier

The skin barrier slows water movement rather than stopping it completely. The stratum corneum’s cells and organized lipid layers contribute to that resistance. Skin-barrier research explains why lipid arrangement matters alongside the ingredients present.

When repeated irritation disrupts that system, water may escape more readily. A face can be oily and still feel dehydrated; sebum and water content are not the same measurement.

Can you measure it at home?

Tightness, a skin pinch, a photograph and a consumer hydration reading are not interchangeable with a controlled TEWL measurement. Research devices require attention to conditions such as body site, temperature, humidity, acclimatization and recent product use. Sweating or movement can also affect interpretation.

Even a clinical reading needs context. It cannot independently diagnose eczema, contact allergy or the cause of an irritated face. Avoid comparing numbers from unrelated studies as though every device and protocol were the same.

Ways to reduce excessive water loss

  • Reduce the exposure causing irritation rather than only adding richer layers.
  • Use a moisturizer with a balance of water-binding and water-loss-limiting ingredients.
  • Avoid repeated hot washing and abrasive rubbing.
  • Adjust cleansing and moisturizer texture when environmental conditions become drier.

For ingredient roles, compare humectants, emollients and occlusives. Petrolatum primarily adds an occlusive layer; ceramides play a different lipid-support role within a complete formula.

Does an occlusive repair the barrier?

An occlusive can lower water loss while it is present. That useful effect is not identical to proving a lasting biological change after the product is removed. Likewise, smoother or plumper-looking skin is a cosmetic observation, not a complete barrier assessment.

A scientific discussion of moisturizer testing illustrates why hydration and barrier endpoints should not be conflated. Ask what “repair” means in the claim you are reading.

Put the science into a practical choice
