How to Use Squalane: Routine Order, Frequency & Eye Area

September 28, 2026

Unlabeled pump bottle, cream jar and tube on a stone surface beside a soft towel.

Use squalane according to the finished product’s directions. A plain squalane oil can be an optional layer after moisturizer; a squalane-containing cream usually occupies the moisturizer step itself. “Squalane serum” is less specific, so check whether the formula is water-based, oil-based or combined with an active ingredient.

For the ingredient’s purpose, see squalane for skin. The goal is a useful softening step, not the maximum number of layers.

Identify what is in your bottle

Product Starting point for use
Plain squalane oil Consider a small amount after your usual moisturizer if you want extra emollience.
Water-based serum containing squalane Follow its instructions; many serums sit before moisturizer.
Squalane-containing moisturizer Use as your moisturizing step; a second oil is optional.
Retinol or acid product with squalane The active ingredient’s directions and cautions take priority.

Read face oil versus serum if the format is unclear. Marketing names alone do not determine application order.

Should squalane go before or after moisturizer?

For a separate plain oil, after moisturizer is a practical starting point. Apply the moisturizer evenly, then add only enough oil to give the desired finish. This is not a clinical rule that every emulsion or treatment must follow: formula instructions can specify a different order.

If oil alone leaves your face tight, adding more may not solve the problem. Squalane oil versus moisturizer explains why a cream can supply functions a water-free oil does not.

Morning, night or both?

Plain squalane does not require a special time of day. Evening can be convenient when you are assessing texture without makeup or sunscreen. Morning use may also fit if the resulting finish works well with your other products.

Keep sunscreen as its own step and follow its label. Do not mix oil into sunscreen or use oil to stretch the amount applied. If the combination pills or slides, simplify the layers or reserve the optional oil for evening.

Can you use it every day?

A tolerated plain squalane product can fit daily use, but twice-daily application is not a requirement. Start with one new product, follow the amount on its label and adjust according to comfort. There is no universal number of drops: bottle dispensers, textures and areas treated differ.

For combination skin, you can use an optional oil only on dry areas. For new formulas, follow a small-area tolerance test before broad application. Persistent irritation is a reason to stop and reassess.

Can squalane go around the eyes?

Squalane can be included in eye-area formulas, but that does not make every facial oil or active serum appropriate for the eyelids. The FDA advises using cosmetics near the eyes only when intended for that area. Keep products out of the eyes and follow the specific label.

Do not apply an oil to an inflamed or infected eye area. Stop if it causes irritation, and seek care if symptoms persist. A squalane ingredient listing cannot override the precautions for accompanying retinol, acids or fragrance.

Do you need a separate bottle?

If your moisturizer already provides a comfortable finish, you may not. Use the squalane selection guide to decide whether a new oil serves a purpose, and the ingredient pairing guide when evaluating an active routine.
